Water-soluble polymers are used in numerous home and personal care products and they thereby enter wastewater streams. Despite their widespread use, many aspects related to the fate of water-soluble polymers in wastewater and downstream environments remain to be elucidated. Michael Zumstein secured funding for a 4-year research project to address this knowledge gap. In collaboration with researchers from BASF SE, the EDGE project team aims to investigate the pathways and kinetics of polymer biodegradation and to identify key enzymes and microorganisms involved in the process.
