Amplicon sequencing is routinely used in soil ecological research. However, soil-specific challenges and the nature of amplicon data present obstacles for ecological interpretation. Led by Lauren and Hannes, many TER members teamed up with Roey Angel and Jan Jansa to critically reflect on the "do's" and "dont's" of using amplicon sequencing in soil ecology.
This perspective article combines a literature review with critical opinions and data analysis, and is intended to serve as a helpful resource for early career researchers, more established scientists with less molecular background, and reviewers of soil-specific journals.
