IT System Administrator

The University of Vienna runs a research infrastructure for storage and analysis of life science data in and around the Vienna Biocenter. The Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is therefore searching for a highly motivated person (m/f/d) with professional experience in the field of IT administration in scientific high-performance computing environments, for the position of an IT system administrator.

Job Description

As IT system administrator at the Life Science Compute Cluster (https://lisc.univie.ac.at), you will support our scientists with respect to computational analysis of life science data. Together with experts from the Vienna University Computer Center (ZID), you will implement and administer innovative and powerful infrastructure for large-scale life science data. You will administer users, install and maintain scientific software and provide helpdesk support. You will support researchers in handling of big research data. You will provide training and consulting to the users and will maintain user-level documentation. You can expect a cutting-edge, diverse and forward-looking work environment.

The position can be filled for 20 - 40 hours per week by mutual agreement. The position is initially limited to 9 months with the option of being made permanent.

 

Your Tasks

  • User management, mainly based on LDAP
  • Installation and update of operating systems, scientific software and databases
  • Providing advice, tools and support to students and researchers in the area of storage and analysis of large-scale life science data
  • Providing advice, tools and support to students and researchers in the area of high-performance computing
  • Performing weekly and monthly maintenance based on Standard Operating Prodecures
  • Maintaining the system and user documentation
  • Providing online and in-person training for new and existing users

 

Your Profile

  • Professional training in the field of IT or scientific computing
  • Experience in the area of computational data analysis, research data management and open science
  • Good knowledge of LINUX operating systems and using command-line programs
  • Experience in computational biology is appreciated
  • Very good command of written and spoken English
  • Willingness to learn
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Creativity and innovative spirit
  • Service orientation, ability to work under pressure and flexibility
  • Independent, accurate and systematic way of working
  • Ability to work in a team
